Discontent, which has been simmering below the placid surface, has come to the boil, thanks to the state terrorism unleashed by the West Bengal government on the people of Nandigram and Singur. Artistes, cultural workers and intellectuals, the revered members of the society, have come out in the open, have organized themselves in a platform and have taken to the streets in protest against the sufferings and torture on their brethren, the common people in Nandigram – Singur of South Bengal and tea gardens of North Bengal. This protest has now taken the shape of a demand for a civil society with high moral order that is Sushil Samaj, which has been undermined since long by inertia and indifference. A true renaissance, which has been contemplated long back by the great minds, is taking off. 2007 has seen brute and persisting attacks from the so-called left Sheraton, which is really giving proxy in West Bengal for US imperialists and their corporate henchmen. The battle launched by the struggling people of Nandigram, Singur and elsewhere and by the artistes, cultural workers and intellectuals closing ranks with them, charts a path for resurgence in true revolutionary spirit to rebuild a new West Bengal, may be India, shorn of backwardness caused by fundamentalism, communalism, casteism etc. A true secular and democratic state is aspired for. Nandigram people in March and November 2007 through their bloodletting have set example by creating a true united front of fighting people, an instance that stands out to be followed elsewhere in the state.

The Forum of Artistes, Cultural Activists And Intellectuals took shape in a convention held in Kolkata on February 28, 2007 in presence of thousands of eminent intellectuals not only of the state of West Bengal, but from elsewhere of the country, professionals and common people.
